HeartMath

The Institute of HeartMath was created in 1991 as a research and educational body. Its research has brought us the HeartMath system—a system that connects the physical, emotional, intuitive and spiritual aspects of the heart in a coherent alignment. This alignment leads to a new way of perceiving, thinking, acting and relating, which is called heart-based living.

HeartMath research has made inroads into many fields, including cardiology, psychology, and physics, and the HeartMath system is now taught in corporations, health-care institutions and education systems, among other venues. First responders and veterans with PTSD are among many who have benefitted from this system.

The HeartMath research has discovered that negative or stressful emotions throw the nervous system out of sync, while positive emotions such as gratitude, appreciation, love, care and compassion increase order and balance in the nervous system. Further, harmonious heart rhythms reduce stress and enhance our ability to think more clearly and self-regulate emotional responses.

Notable findings from the HeartMath research include:

  • The heart sends more information to the brain than the brain does to the heart.
  • The heart is first to respond to stimuli—we will feel something before we think it.
  • The heart has its own intelligence.

Our emotional states are reflected in our heart rhythms, which in turn affect our brain’s ability to process information, make decisions, solve problems, and experience and express creativity. This also leads to our bodies being pulled into entrainment with our heart’s rhythms.

Events themselves, whether from our past or those happening now, do not cause us harm. How we react to them, however, will either raise or lower our energy. Negative emotions will drain our “inner battery” emotionally, mentally and physically. Positive emotions will raise our energy. We can learn to manage and reverse the damage from each emotional drain by using the HeartMath system. Every thought, every feeling, no matter how big or small, impacts our energy reserves, and the longer we hold on to them, the bigger the impact on us—positive or negative.

I’d love to share with you how the HeartMath system can make a difference in your life!
